I can hardly believe its been three and half years since the Kidnapped Phillipe story arc: the suspense captured in this strip still holds.

To anyone reading this arc for the first time, I recommend you skip the comments on this strip and come back after finishing the arc, as there are several spoilers below.

Good lookin' out.

Thanks for the warning. You're making the world a better place.

Yeah, this arc is genius. I was genuinely terrified for Philippe, even though death in Achewood means little unless you find true love through it. This strip should be made into a few short films. Problem is, I would declare ANY voice actors cast to be the wrong voices.

Despite all of the tragedy of it, the image of a sad Phillipe in a bee costume is so fucking cute.
prolefeed5 » pro 3 years ago
I love how Phillipe is so even-keeled about hitting a deer considering how innocently sensitive he is about so many other things... I definitely underestimated the wickedness of his sack.

He hasn't yet taken the ramifications in. He was about to start sobbing before Nice Pete(?) shot him.

Yes. It is.

Thanks for ruining the suspense!

The problem is, the profile actually changes in the next strip. It doesn't look like Ray here, and it doesn't look like Nice Pete in the next one. A cool trick, though; you don't notice it the first time.

it's close enough that i'm not gonna call shenanigans
thatcrazycommie » neu 2 years ago
I like to think we're seeing it from Philippe's perspective in this one, and Ray's silhouette looks enough like Nice Pete that Phillipe sees it that way.

The blam explodes out of the panel

The saddest thing.

Chris Ware?

He's trying to get away...

...I guess I would too

Deer don't bite, deer are soft and friendly

Sadder than Bill Watterson's dead bird.
johnnybaverage » neu 3 days ago
That is some serious avatar/comment dissonance you've got going on there.

I love how he first seems so remorseful, but it's quickly followed up with "stupid deer!" It's like saying, "I'm so sorry you're a fucking retard."
ibetso » neu 2 years ago
Nah I think that's a natural response from him. "Goddammit why did you have to have to run onto the road" is probably the first thing said by anyone who ever hit an animal with their car.
zem » neu 2 years ago
especially when they're panicked and trying to get away from nice pete

The first time I read this strip, I think I read it out of sequence, so I did not fully appreciated the ambiguity of the silhouetted figure firing a gun. The terror on Philippe's face could just as easily be the terror of watching Nice Pete pointing a gun at him as the terror of watching Ray's act of mercy.

Of course, Nice Pete would not stoop to murdering with guns. Not classy.

Looking back, this is one of the best short stories, so much done with simple sound and shade. The last two panels are terrifying.

Damn Onstad and Philippe for making me cry.

I half shit myself when I read this at first... I seriously thought Phillippe had died... I still get shivers just from the memory. It seems just like Phillippe that his final weakness would be his compassion for the deer. Thank God it was Ray.

Please people! Don't ruin the story for people going through the archives!

i agree but thank god some guy up there commented so this wonderful arc wouldn't be ruined >.< i think this is probably my favourite arc to date it's pure briliance
wite_rabit » con 1 years ago
Why? Characters have died more than once already - it isn't as though death really has a hold on anyone other than squirrels.

the struggling, dying deer made my heart hurt.

I think those lines "He's trying to get away...I guess I would too" are the saddest, introspective and somber in this entire comic and are only rivaled by Beef walking alone under the streetlights, thinking about marriage.

Most introspective* FUCK

Comment/avatar work perfectly. Chubby.

I'm going to get in a lot of trouble for this...

But I rated this strip a 1. I rate strips by nothing else but how I look when I read them. This is the only strip ((To my recall)) that I've ever given a 1. Because it makes me sob. So many emotions are perfectly captured in this strip, and it shakes me to my very core.
