After waiting 5 years for Onstad to do something with this set-up, I'm beginning to think it's just not gonna happen.
luckypyjamas » pro2 years ago
i like to think that philippe is just being philippe, and teodor uses the opportunity to mess with mr. bear.
who of course is not fooled.
mattylite » neu1 years ago
Now it's six. I'm glad though because nothing could live up to what we are thinking. At least me. It is ... it is SCANDALOUS.
utv » neu8 months ago
Well, we finally saw closure on Darlene, so it's not impossible. That said, I think the joke is that this strip's so bizarre.
jokercross » neu2 years ago
I've always been curious myself.
tekende » neu1 years ago
A pup is a baby otter.
a_dude » neu2 years ago
Baby otters are called "pups" or puppies. Grown up otters use rocks as crude tools to smash open shellfish. I wonder what happend to Philippe.?..
jdhenry105 » neu2 years ago
He was smashed open by a shellfish.
cailetshadow » pro2 years ago
As a pup, Philippe was tragically deprived of sticking his arms into the toilet.

I'm proud of you for saying this, sir.
m3funkyb » neu2 years ago
i think teodor is bullshitting
alejandroadam » neu2 years ago
that would make more sense
direhaggis » neu2 years ago
Is it just me or does Cornelius' glasses look like a bicycle?
dicklaurent » neu2 years ago
ILLEGAL GHOST bicycle.
snowman » neu2 years ago
Amazing avatar.
direhaggis » neu2 years ago
Tripy.
thegoodwillgirl » neu1 years ago
Oh god.
I chubby you, sir.
spectre » pro2 years ago
"How so?" IS the punch line. Cornelius stands there thinking about all the stuff that could happen to a stuffed otter baby, and when he realizes the whole idea is absurd, he calls Teodor on it.
ggvaidya » pro2 years ago
Ditto everything you said, except that this one _is_ funny to me. I imagine Teodor and Mr. Bear standing outside the bathroom for hours wondering what it might be, while the little otter keeps at it, whatever 'it' might be.
Now, "Philippe is standing on it", I don't get, but it *is* Achewood #1, and that Counts.

If you prefer one-strip-one-punchline jokes, PVP is right over there. Now let us enjoy the early strips for what they are: rough diamonds.
snowman » neu2 years ago
Yes!
lux » neu1 years ago
The real punchline is that you'd expect Cornelius to ask what happened. Instead, he politely inquires, "How so?" His obviously confused (or suspicious) speech leads to an awkward, humorous situation.
em2 » neu1 years ago
Look who's being a dick about terms.
epicurus » pro2 years ago
This might explain why Philippe does not live with his mom?
stuart » pro2 years ago
Arguably, this is where Mr. Bear started to become Cornelius.
cracklewater » neu1 years ago
Could be, he's using words like 'yeah' in the previous strip, even before the tequila has taken hold.
It's a little disturbing.
cracklewater » neu1 years ago
Or not. He's excited at the idea of Flavour Flav visiting in the very next strip, and uses terms like "awesome!"
There is no booze involved; possibly a hangover.
I am further disturbed.
stuart » neu1 years ago
cracklewater breaks it down
shutup_shutup » neu1 years ago
How so?
lawdog » pro2 years ago
We've all seen Philippe's arms. How the heck can he even reach the water?
techiebabe » pro2 years ago
The same way he gives.....Huuugs!
sneeepa » neu2 years ago
somehow this strip gets me pretty much everytime and i cannot measure why
mollybloom11 » pro2 years ago
Phillipe is the only character who really hasn't changed at all over the years... I'm glad.
farqussus » neu1 years ago
This has been said about three different characters now.
joeyramoney » neu2 years ago
looking at old strips like this is kind of like looking at baby photos. it was all so innocent, so harmless back then.
cracklewater » neu1 years ago
You're saying Achewood is so jaded, so harmful in 2008?
quartzblade » neu2 years ago
what a terrible misunderstanding
ctrl_z » neu2 years ago
"when he was a pup"? Philippe is always 5
baryonyx » neu2 years ago
The therapy is for the time his arm got burned by the Big Bang.
boopy » pro1 years ago
this strip is my childhood. end of story
sparhawk » pro1 years ago
Obviously Phillipe failed to rescue a turd at an age where every victory counts for something.
wonglers » neu1 years ago
The jig is up, Teodor.
aseidel » neu11 months ago
This is one of the most awkward moments ever on the internet. I love how uncomfortable I feel after reading this strip.
woodenteeth » neu8 months ago
What did you do to Philippe you MONSTER!
un_malpaso » pro11 months ago
Can I just say that,
it's amazed me how few have picked up on the Cornelius Bear/Cornelius Elephant connection. (See Babar!)
The glasses are the same.
