ALT TEXT: I hope to god we see more Sidney Yamahata.
straw » neu 11 months ago
:sigh: It was my first and last alt-text posting. Still, I am glad that they are no longer necessary.
gussiejives » neu 1 years ago
I will say that Sidney Yamahata looks like a deranged Mr. Belvedere.

Although Mr. Belvedere is already pretty deranged.
tekende » pro 9 months ago
According to our new arrival, at least.

Please, God, no. Even in his clothes he is too ugly.

I'm enjoying this week's run of strips perhaps more than I should. I'm secretly amused half to death by lolcats.com.
veck » neu 1 years ago
I'm horrified that it's been Achewood that's introduced me to such a thing.
equinn2006 » pro 1 years ago
I am beginning to fear a Beef reprisal here, possibly a dis-invitation to a certain civil union. At least, that's how it's going on in THIS cool cat's brain!
projectyl » neu 1 years ago
Why did Ray have Roane Shaughnessy in his autocomplete list? Does he frequently contact Roane with "craaazy shit they oughta put on the damn news"? If so, why is Roane still fairly cordial to Ray here?

Time will tell, unless it doesn't.
closefriend » pro 1 years ago
Well, Roane is obviously a human and he thinks Ray is one, so they can't know each other that well unless Roane has an Underground VIP pass.
equinn2006 » neu 1 years ago
I feel like the unknown reason Roane and Ray have corresponded previously is the sweet bonus joke atop the larger main joke of the strip. This subtle complexity is what Achewood is all about to me. Who says a comic strip should have one focus?
featurelessvoid » neu 1 years ago
Ray has hell of news producers in his autocomplete list. A mogul gots to know how to work the press.
zeroasalimit » neu 1 years ago
You think they don't put Rays ideas of heads been blown off in the news?
varnish » pro 1 years ago
You'll see Sidney Yamahata again. You see him everytime you turn on the local access news station. It doesn't matter where you are.

Truer words were never asset-bar'd. Chby.

I can't help but think LOLAchewood might be the stake in this meme's black, pulsing, adorable heart.
silver_lake » neu 1 years ago
Yeah, if Onstad hadn't written everything they'd copied in the first place.
lateadopter » neu 1 years ago
Onstad also wrote the Volvo of Despair, so he's copying his old material, too. What makes these fun is the references to old story arcs where it is actually appropriate to say the cat was in the place doing the thing. (Plus, the involvement of real cartoon cats).

"I'm in your crate, judging your badasses."
toughasnails001 » neu 1 years ago
Let's not start with this. Please.
lateadopter » neu 1 years ago
Start what? Several people seem to have thought I was dissing the quality of Onstad's work, when really I was praising some of the stuff other folks have posted here. A clarification was in order.

"I'm in your box, waiting to die with all the other children."

Sidney doesn't get that someone who would pick up a reference to "Cat 5" would not need to be informed of the lolcats phenomenon.

I do not understand the Cat 5 thing. Not one bit.

Someone has anonymously registered channel7kacw.com in the short time since this cartoon was posted. Congratulations to the mystery web-person.

Do either of these meet your criteria or is "dead guy" a retroactive thing with you

I do not know if retroactive is the word I should be using but you GET IT

the subtle touches are okay but I'm really not feeling this one. Achewood interacting with real-world internet memes feels cheap somehow.

Here here. These could be guest strips.
jujubeesforjesus » neu 1 years ago
Sorry, 'almost' be guest strips. Needs to be a gosh dang edit on this here forum.
straw » neu 1 years ago
So I suppose all those brilliant references to Wikipedia and eBay don't count, then?
autrepoupee » neu 1 years ago
There is a difference between referencing the 'internet' (Wikipedia, eBay) and referencing 'internet culture' (lolcats, other memes). That being said, I think these strips were both quite funny. I usually hate references for reference-sakes, but this fits in with the Achewood universe pretty squarely. Ya see, theys cats, and theys funny!
straw » neu 1 years ago
I agree. I think that lolachewood is as relevant as Ray thinking he's jerking around an e-mail con artist. lolcats mixed with Achewood seems like a natural fit just as Ray thinking he knows his internet.
grayfox » neu 1 years ago
Referencing memes, especially one with relation to 4chan is basically scraping the bottom of the barrel. Granted I do loves me some lolcats.
jujubeesforjesus » neu 1 years ago
The issue is not referencing 'the real world' (if lolcats can even be included in that category) but rather the quality of the reference. Keith Moon's head in a jar? Weird, unexpected, and clever. An online comic strip about the latest internet fad? Obvious, lazy and unclever. Vive la difference.

Yes. Sifl and Olly is the best thing that no one knows ever happened to television.

The forum most often brings to mind either the Mexican Jumping Bean Bag guy or mr Crescent Fresh. Its just so crescent...

lolcats is cool, though, plus it's at least tangentially related to achewood (because they be cats n' shit). It's not like they're doing a strip about All Your Base.

This does not seem to me a particularly meaningful distinction.

odvo » neu 1 years ago
(From Wikipedia) A lolcat is an image macro featuring a photograph of a cat with a humorous and idiosyncratic caption. The name "lolcat" is a compound of lol and cat.[1][2] lolcats are also referred to as cat macros.[3] lolcats are created for photo sharing imageboards and other internet forums, especially on Saturdays ("Caturdays").[4] lolcats are similar to other animal-based image macros such as the O RLY? owl,[5] but the cuteness of cats "enhances"[6] the appeal and increasing prominence[7][8][9] of the Internet meme. lolcats are examples of anthropomorphism. Common graphical themes include cats holding invisible objects.[6]
straw » neu 1 years ago
I want to know what's so uncute about owls. Is it that they sometimes eat cats? Does that subtract from the mean cuteness?

You know, people criticize Wikipedia for bad or unreliable information - but worse still is the bad -writing-. When a bunch of people get together to collaborate on writing a -single paragraph- it shows - especially when some of the major contributors are verbal slobs.
steerpike66 » neu 1 years ago
This is true in many cases but usually not on authoritative wiki pages about big serious things. The idea that a page about something as ephemeral and futile as lolcats should be meticulously written and researched seems pointless and awful to me, like a glorious epic poem about Rosie O Donnell.

darthemed » neu 1 years ago
Have you seen the Batman page? It is a featured article.
steerpike66 » neu 1 years ago
Batman is not ephemeral trash; he is one of about five of the most iconic fictional American Noir characters of the 20th century, like Philip Marlowe, and has proven his popularity and durability for 50 years. He is not an lolcat.

so, it has been mentioned several times that Roast Beef is a gray cat.. could this be a reference to the song "all cats are gray" by the cure?
