I hadn't thought about it before, but could it be that the reason the characters are all so underdeveloped and ignorant to the ways of the world in the early strips is that they just recently came to life? I doubt it, but that's the way I'll think of it, just to make some of the more Night and Day inconsistencies go down easier. It really would explain a lot.

It could also be that Chris wasn't taking it that seriously at the beginning. But the Fanboy Police might prefer your idea.

It's so funny that Onstad's initial approach to his characters were that... they were alive stuffed animals. Of course this remains the truth to this day, but they are fully anthropomorphic now, whereas here it is again indicated that they have the ignorance of human affairs that such things might be expected to have.
