ooc, but another achewood line that has infiltrated my lexicon.
norrin » neu 2 years ago
I just assume he only acts this way when he drinks tequila, and so he never drinks it. A lot of people do things they don't normally do when they drink tequilla.

jthm_guitarist » con 2 years ago
He always rates a drink by how afraid of the police he is.
idsyen » pro 1 years ago
Really, that's a pretty decent criterion.
chuchurocket » neu 1 years ago
this phrase is actually how a few of my friends and i gauge how drunk the other is. "you afraid of the police right now?"
woodenteeth » neu 8 months ago
My brother spent a night on the tequila once and decided that driving home was a sensational idea anyway. The cops woke my parents up and my brother came out yelling at them "You pricks have to find who stole my car!"

Someone had sited him running away from the scene after he skidded over a gutter, through a fence and lodged said vehicle fucking lengthwise between two trees.
pohlhoud » pro 1 years ago
It actually was "remade" later where Cornelius used the same "line"
See for yourself
sparhawk » neu 1 years ago
You made chubby, Det. Pohlhoud. Keep this up and you'll be a chubby seargent some day (seargent's better than detective, right?).
paperypip » neu 1 years ago
Huh. I recognized the allusion to the earlier strip in that one, but for some reason thought that it was Lyle who said the original line.
waddlerz » neu 1 years ago
Hence why Onstad needed someone with that personality...hello Raymond Smuckles!
2kings » neu 2 years ago
classic!
nyu » neu 2 years ago
This is the strip that sold me on achewood.
stabones » pro 2 years ago
agreed, this strip rocks
moot74 » neu 2 years ago
Yup, so long ago...
deusoma » pro 2 years ago
Gah I accidentally gave you a lame instead of a cubby. Sorry bout that, this strip does indeed make me laugh every time I see it.
ravindra108 » neu 1 years ago
I agree. This is the first one that made me laugh uncontrollably.
mira » neu 2 years ago
Was this the first time there was cussing in Achewood?
tellumo » pro 2 years ago
It's out of character for Cornelius today, but it's still one of my favorite lines.
lawbot » neu 2 years ago
With hindsight, that makes this strip even more delicious.
science » neu 2 years ago
One of the first strips that made me a regular reader.
overmedicated » neu 2 years ago
My, how much the collective's knowledge of alcohols has grown.
senor_diablo » neu 2 years ago
Absolut brilliance! That's why I got a signed copy of this strip for my home bar!
Plus who wouldn't talk like that after the taste test?
overmedicated » neu 2 years ago
Was Absolut a typo? Please say it wasn't.
gouldgonewild » neu 1 years ago
I NEED the answer to this question. Because that was hilarious
qatipay » pro 2 years ago
True, out of character for Cornelius, but still so excellent.
lawbot » neu 2 years ago
Actually I just seriously drank tequila for the first time, and I can corroborate that tequila is special in this way.
farqussus » neu 1 years ago
Tequila makes me naked. If I could bring myself to type a frowny face right now, I would.
lux » neu 1 years ago
Tequila Naked = Frowny face?

You sure you're not doing shots of Scope or something?
gouldgonewild » neu 1 years ago
I just wanted to say, that I liked that your status is Oh Comely.
lux » neu 1 years ago
Heh, thanks. It's my favorite Neutral Milk Hotel song.

I have proclaimed this lack of fear on upwards of half of all times I have been intoxicated.
ambala » pro 2 years ago
replace "vodka" and "bourbon" with some crazy expensive boutique liquor, and replace Cornelius with Ray, and this could be a recent strip...the humor is classic Achewood.
juancarlos » pro 2 years ago
First two panels I'm thinking "mmm the whole meta-awareness of talking animals and stuffed bears never really worked" but the final made me chuckle.
gethen » pro 2 years ago
T and CB are not fully realized as characters yet, but this has been a good one-off strip to send to people who aren't believers yet.
jokercross » neu 2 years ago
Still playing with the reality construct. I have yelled that last line after doing a shot more than once.
eric » neu 2 years ago
Who hasn't yelled that after that combo of shots?
touchmenot » pro 2 years ago
This was it. Maybe it's the alcohol theme, but this strip got me hooked.
rincewind » con 2 years ago
I'm just too distracted by how out of out-of-character these lines seem today to really enjoy this one. :(
a_dude » pro 2 years ago
Tequila is a vile drink but it has it's uses.
dirtyantaeus » neu 2 years ago
This strip is pure gold, no matter how out of character it is.
fuckyoufriday » neu 2 years ago
If you guys think this is out of character, wait until you get to original Pat!
jumpingjehosephat » neu 2 years ago
This one of the traps I lay for the unsuspecting addict.
stuart » neu 2 years ago
Fuck along, now.
phthoggos » neu 2 years ago
To be fair, we can't fault Mr. Bear for swearing in this one -- the whole joke is that the tequila instantly transforms his personality. The weird part is that today's Cornelius surely has an encyclopedic knowledge of all alcoholic beverages.
tombsgrave » pro 2 years ago
The contrast between how Cornelius usually acts compared to the lack of policefear inspired by tequila makes this hilarious even today.
le_chien_manquee » neu 2 years ago
so true
neitherman » pro 2 years ago
Not only do you hear Cornelius' bad-assery, but you also see it in the thrown shotglass. Awesome strip.
rolotonybrowntown » neu 2 years ago
I originally thought he said "I am DEFINITELY not afraid of fucking the POLICE right now." I'm not sure which I like better.
spectre » neu 2 years ago
Fucking the band or the cops? Tell us. We're here to help.
zapatos » neu 1 years ago
Why not both?
editrix » neu 2 years ago
Cornelius's outstanding "Fuck along, now" today shows that he's not afraid to do a grody mouth.
aarongstock » neu 2 years ago
Also, remember who won The Badass Games.
hikikomori » pro 2 years ago
Cornelius has no reason to be afraid of the police. Ever.
boredom_man » neu 2 years ago
Because when imprisoned, he always winds up with the tidiest roommates?
lux » neu 1 years ago
The moderate German, of course.
shoinan » neu 2 years ago
Nowadays I'm not sure any of the characters would fit into this strip. Most of the cast are established drinkers. He he, a similar strip with Phillipe might be funny :)
straw » pro 2 years ago
This strip was my introduction to Achewood. Ah the memories. It was printed off and on my friend's fridge.
evolume » neu 2 years ago
It's not out of character! It's tequila AND it's his 3rd shot!

rhymesforkids » neu 2 years ago
this strip is hilarious!
molesticide » pro 2 years ago
man, how is this not true to character of cornelius?

how is this not true to character of ANYbody who takes a shot of vodka, bourbon, and tequila in what looks like less than twenty seconds?

the part that's out of character is he says "yeah" in the second panel.
audhumla » pro 2 years ago
It seems out of character, perhaps, that Cornelius is not already well-versed in the effects and tastes of various liquors
pettytyrant » pro 2 years ago
Whenever I recommend Achewood to my compatriots and comrades I refer them to this comic and the Nice Pete "killing is like basketball" comic. I also recommend that the whole series works best if you read through the archives from the beginning.
wae » neu 2 years ago
An All-Time Top 10 strip for me.
myrrdisparo » neu 2 years ago
For some reason, this strip, along with the "Food chain" one have always been among my favourites, and I couldn't explain why for either one.
I guess I just find stuffed animals yelling inherently funny. Is that a new fetish?
rachel » neu 2 years ago
this is the internet we are talking about here

there is no new fetish
quarantine » pro 2 years ago
This is the strip that got me hooked.
skrizach » neu 2 years ago
I love this strip
hyetal » pro 2 years ago
Mr. Bear may be way out of character in this, but maybe that's why I love it so much.
rowboat » pro 2 years ago
Definitely one of the best early strips, but (and I know this has been commented on ad nauseam) the old Cornelius is SO JARRING! He beat Lyle to the punch profanity-wise! In fact, he kind of IS Lyle here. It's hard to take, knowing now what a Fine Gentleman he really is.
echidnaboy » neu 2 years ago
I disagree. Inexperience of liquor is out of character for Cornelius, but outright inconceivable for Lyle. Also, Mr Bear's dialogue in panel 3 pretty much describes Lyle's default state.
rowboat » pro 2 years ago
I'm not too good with reading, but it sounds kind of like you agree.
echidnaboy » neu 2 years ago
My point was that Mr. Bear's behaviour doesn't remind me of Lyle, because Lyle is an even more experienced drinker than him. Furthermore, alcohol wouldn't inspire Lyle to say "I am DEFINITELY not afraid of the fucking POLICE right now," because he feels that way from the moment he wakes up in the mor... uh, I mean, afternoon.
stwee » pro 2 years ago
Cornelius may be messing with Teodor, perhaps for assuming that an elderly bear would need an alcohol tasting session, despite being such a certified (and award-winning) badass.
Or just playing along for the free booze.
shemmjacc » pro 2 years ago
So is Lyle wearing a Mr. Bear costume?
thesoulbear » neu 2 years ago
Its wierd how the early Mr. Bear is so much different, especially in this strip. You could switch the character's lines without much difference.
snowman » pro 2 years ago
I think it's out of character for Cornelius, sure. But that's the joke here. He took a shot of tequila and got crazy. The only thing that doesn't really work, continuity-wise, is that one would assume Cornelius has years of drinking experience, and would not be tasting these for the first time. But who cares, what was Onstad supposed to do, write out complete biographies for each character before he started Achewood? I, for one, really enjoy seeing the exploration and seeing these characters evolve.
snowman » neu 2 years ago
Also, this was the first Achewood that I emailed someone. She liked it.
kamet » pro 2 years ago
I started at the beginning.. but this is the strip that made me fall madly, stalker-esque, in love with Achewood. That line is great.. ESPECIALLY from Cornelius.
justa » neu 2 years ago
This is basically why I had to stop drinking tequila.
coldfrog » neu 1 years ago
Despite the lack of eventual character continuity, this is definitely one of my favorite earlier strips.
boopy » pro 1 years ago
haw haw haw. oh such brilliance.

One of the best early strips. Always makes me laugh.

I love saying this to my friends at the end of the evening and having them look at me blankly. Screw them, I say. At least I'm not afraid of the fucking police!
wonglers » neu 1 years ago
It has nothing to do with the Tequila,
That's how Cornelius gets after 3 shots.
berami » pro 1 years ago
I love this strip, though he's obviously drinking Jack, which isn't a bourbon.
dasilodavi » neu 1 years ago
It's been awhile, but I believe THIS was the strip that got me into Achewood.
aseidel » pro 1 years ago
I as well, I sling tequila for a living and this strip is now posted on the wall of the Mexican bar I work at.
sjb3 » neu 10 months ago
Why, oh why did Connie speak so colloquially in these early strips? I can't take him seriously. Nonetheless, classic Achewood is genius.
mrchuckletrouzd » neu 3 months ago
Still developing. A baby who cannot yet hold it's head up.

But Clever. Damned Clever.
